NIGHTFALL

There are three things that I want to comment on about the radio play. First is the vague bias on religion. I’m not really sure if the play was against religion or for religion. The reason for this is they named religion as a cult. It made the cult leader seem crazy and irrational who keeps on talking about the end of the world that is caused by the Stars that is written in the Book of Revelations. It all seems crazy to the people who aren’t members of the cult. However, despite this seeming insanity, at the end of the play, they were right. It was the end of the world. At first, I was annoyed at how rude they portrayed religion; but they backtracked and proved them right.

Next is the role of scientists and nonbelievers. Again, the opinion of the play towards these people are vague. They were the ones that appeared to be sane and rational. They were poised and knowledgeable. As for the nonbelievers, they didn’t panic and just didn’t care about what was happening because they didn’t believe it. However, towards the end, they were the ones who regretted their indifference because the night did come and the end of the world came. It seems that the writer of the script wanted to convey the message that at the end of the world, science can’t save you neither will ignorance.

Last is the end of the world. The radio play interpreted the end of the world, not as BOOM BOOM PEW PEW KABOOM! End, but merely as a nightfall. No one died because of exploding or burning things, but everyone will go crazy because of the immense darkness. I wonder if this is how the world will really end.
Is it?
