Recognized in his field, Dr. Jose Cruz
Jr. is noted to be one of the brightest minds in his generation. Aside from
graduating as summa cum laude from one of the prestigious schools here in the
Philippines, he is also a noted theorist and a Distinguished Professor of
Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computing Engineering in Ohio
State University.
BACKGROUND AND EDUCATION:
Although Dr. Cruz now resides in the
United States, he still traces his roots in Malolos, Bulacan. He had his elementary
and secondary education in his native town. After that, he went to the
University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman for his college studies where he
completed his BS in Electrical Engineering in 1953 with flying colors. He also
topped the Electrical Engineering Board Exams. His education doesn’t end there
though, because after he graduated from UP, he went to the US and obtained his
MS in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in
1956 and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois in
1959.
Starting his career as a teacher in UP,
Dr. Cruz later on moved to the US to pursue his studies. He was able to author
and co-author 6 books and has published 260 research papers. Aside from being a
student and an educator, he was able to hold positions like being the Dean of
the College of Engineering at the Ohio State University, the Chair of the
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of
California and the first holder of the Howard D. Winbigler Chair in
Engineering.
However, what made Dr. Cruz renowned in
the field of Engineering is his extensive research on game theory, circuits and
automatic control. He had his research, innovation and theory creation in a
span of 50 years.
PROFESSIONAL
AWARDS AND HONORS:
This
guy also had a lot of shimmering awards and had been recognized not only in his
field but also in his schools. Some of his awards include the IEEE William E.
Sayle Award for Achievement in Education, the IEEE James James H. Mulligan Jr. Education
Medal and IEEE Richard M. Emberson Award, among others. He is also a member in
the National Academy of Engineering since 1980, in the National Academy of
Science and Technology (NAST, Philippines) where he was elected as Academician
in 2012 and elected Corresponding Member in 2003.
Aside
from that, he received the Distinguished Alumni Award for Lifetime Achievement
from University of the Philippines Alumni Association in 2010. He is selected
as Most Outstanding Alumnus of University of the Philippines Alumni Association
in America in 1989. He is also a recipient for the Halliburton Engineering
Education Leadership Award in the University of Illinois in 1981. Besides that,
he is one of the founding Members of the Philippine American Academy of Science
and Engineering (PAASE) in 1980.
PERSONAL COMMENTS:
As I was reading Dr. Cruz’s
biography—his achievements, recognitions and honors—I was completely mind
blown. I honestly adore him as a student, academician and overall, as a person,
who was able to successfully juggle his personal and academic life altogether.
Being a Filipino, this just makes me proud and just happy that a fellow
Filipino was able to attain this kind of status. Reading his achievements just
keeps me motivated and all.
